Public Law 107-217: Telecommuting and Other Alternative Workplace Arrangements

The Public Law 107-217 addressed the development of alternative workplace arrangements and required the General Services Administration to provide guidance, assistance, and oversight to Executive agencies regarding planning, establishment, and operation of alternative workplace arrangements. Alternative workplace arrangements were defined to include hoteling, telecommuting, virtual offices, telework centers, hot desking, and other distributed workplace arrangements. 

Public Law 111-350: Authorization of Telecommuting for Federal Contractors

The Public Law 111-350 permitted telecommuting by employees of Federal Government contractors in the performance of contracts entered into with executive agencies.   

Public Law 116-260: Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021

This Act directed the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information to use the funds made available to implement a program to make grants to eligible entities to expand access to and adoption of broadband service on Tribal land or remote learning, telework, or telehealth resources during the COVID-19 pandemic.  

Amendment to Section 543 of the National Energy Conservation Policy Act

This Amendment to Section 543 provided that in developing an implementation strategy for the maintenance, purchase, and use by federal agencies of energy-efficient and energy-saving information technologies, each federal agency would consider, among other things, secure telework and travel substitution tools.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission issued this technical assistance document to address the use of telework as a reasonable accommodation for individuals with a disability under the ADA.
