A delegation from the Ministry of Labor of Brazil visited Transport Canada to learn about occupational health and safety in the maritime sector, particularly in light of Brazil’s recent ratification of International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention 178, which is concerned with seafarers’ living and working conditions.
The activity consisted of presentations, meetings with representatives of employers and workers and a visit to a cargo ship.
Steps to follow include reaching agreements with other government agencies to exchange information and perform operative oversight, disseminating information about health and safety laws in Brazil, training workers in health and safety matters, making technical and administrative information easily available in electronic form, developing Tripartite Commissions as forums for discussion, and conducting ongoing training of labor inspectors.
In the opinion of the Brazilian delegation, the cooperation activity was fruitful, yielding useful technical knowledge especially in the areas of standardization of procedures and protocol.
