Five representatives of Trinidad and Tobago’s Occupational Health and Safety Agency, which is attached to the Ministry of Labor, traveled to the United States to learn about the functioning of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). This activity was particularly relevant since Trinidad and Tobago was at the time redefining its OHS system and was able to incorporate into it elements developed and tested by the United States.
One specific action to redefine the OSH system was the formulation of a plan to ensure health and safety in all units, as an operational framework providing guidelines to ensure occupational health and safety in all sectors. This is a comprehensive plan covering aspects involving the development and implementation of a training model for officials, a code of ethics, inspections, investigation of complaints, a health and safety committee, and the establishment of standards to ensure high quality performance and the fulfillment of objectives.
