Description:

The self-assessment tool was developed by the Labour Program as a proactive approach to measure a federally regulated employer’s level of compliance with specific regulations. This initiative was developed to assess and better measure compliance in high-risk industries.

Objectives:

The self-assessment tool has been an effective proactive mechanism for assessing compliance within the targeted sector. We have received positive feedback from stakeholders for this initiative. The results obtained assist the Labour Program in subsequent compliance activities, and may help identify best practices, which could in turn be used to develop future education and training materials. It also serves to remind employers of their obligations under Part II (occupational health and safety) and Part III (federal labour standards) of the Canada Labour Code. This tool has been used with the following industries: Ports Authorities and Ports Employers’ Associations; Airlines (medium and large businesses); Trucking; and currently with the Longshoring sector.
