Description:

Five officials from the Guyanese Ministry of Labor received technical assistance from the Ministry of Labor of Trinidad and Tobago; the progress made in this area by the latter country, which recently enacted new OSH legislation, has been widely recognized in the Caribbean context.

Enactment of this legislation enabled the Occupational Health and Safety Agency to be established, which was the center for the presentations and discussions of this first visit.  Lessons learned and steps to be taken pointed to a need for training of officials to familiarize them with Guyana’s occupational health and safety legislation and enable them to work well with it, and for the implementation of a safety hot line.
