Description:

Three officials from the Dominican Republic’s Secretariat of Labor (SET) traveled to Buenos Aires to learn at first hand about the operations of Argentina’s Obligatory Labor Conciliation Service (SECLO), the mediation system, and mediator training activities. As noted by the SET officials, this activity was of great use in drafting a conciliation bill for the Dominican Republic, which included some of the lessons learned from the Argentine experience.

As a result of the visit, the Secretariat of Labor (SET) has set forth guidelines for follow-up on lessons learned.  It requested a visit from high representatives of SECLO and Argentina’s Optional Business and Services Labor Conciliation Service (SECOSE) to hold a workshop on labor conciliation, which was held in October 2007, with support from the RIAL Fund.  It proposed conducting workshops with labor tribunal magistrates nationwide to demonstrate to them the importance for the employer and worker sector of advising the SET of the conciliation of individual and collective disputes arising under labor contracts.
